As the party recovered from the ankheg ambush and Dralban tended to Blank's wounds, Bilkin "rested" by a dying oak, the journal open, his numerous tables of cracked ciphers and gibberish sections strewn in a semicircle at his right. He turned a page and flinched, blinking many times. His eyes were by now accustomed to seeing patterns in garbled text and diagrams and have developed habits such as simply looking at the page as a whole, darting from similar collections of scrawls to other collections of scrawls. So when he encountered a whole section written in (relatively) clear, lined Common, his head spun and he struggled for a moment to remember how to read like a normal person.
"... whoever knew? It must certainly be true, then, that the King's daughter will inherit the throne. Yes, He knows many things, whether they be things of the past, present, or future ...[splotched out text] gods must be laughing at the folly of her subjects' ways. I've learned many a thing in my twenty six years of communing with Him, and every thing of this world has turned out to be true, whether it was a prophecy or a remark on some obscurity of the past. He exists out of time, it appears. Yes, certainly, and the thousands of whispers are merely just one voice speaking out of all times simultaneously! It is only a matter of [page of indiscernible scribbling] for there to be the fall of the Empire. It is all a plot, and I would be called mad for it, yes ... It is not clear to me whether He is aware of my link to Him, for the whispers sometimes seem to be directed at someone else, if they have a direction at all. Perhaps He communicates with many such linked people such as myself all at once? He exists out of time, it is not improbable... An interesting concept. Could I warp the events of the past by sending mess … robability of the events to occur as such can only be linked to the alignment of the four perianarchic planes, but why would that matter in the Far Realm? It wouldn't, He is merely sending ripples that cause false symptoms, surely this is it. I must search further. There are others about, the combination of our knowledge can result in something great..."
Bilkin collected his various tables and charts and bookmarked his spot in the journal with them. A troubled look was conflicting with one of hopefulness, warring for control of his face, resulting in a grimace for seemingly no reason.
Perhaps there are others... It must be explained later on. Maybe there is a reason for all this, a guiding force.
He stood up, his eyes flashed a deep green momentarily and his hands made strange, blurring gestures, and the Unseen Servant was born. "Collect dry firewood and place it at this oak. I want enough to last through a rainy night. A few minutes before you go back to wherever you come from, see me." He'd noticed a peculiar pattern with the spell. Typically, an Unseen Servant is a mindless, separate entity that simply comes into being when the spell is cast. However, certain quirks gave rise to Bilkin suspecting that he was summoning the same Servant every time. Unseen Servants also simply drop whatever they're holding when their time is up, but Bilkin noticed that occasionally, items he gave the Unseen Servant disappeared with it when its time was up. Some items returned upon the Servant being summoned again, but others simply didn't come back. He intended to give it one of his left socks again, as those have come back every time.
Must be an explanation for this later on in that bizarre journal, the Servant is its doing. I merely followed the diagrams for the spell. Perhaps it's a variation on the regular spell? An interesting topic, one to study sometime when solace, a private room, and a few months become available. Maybe the Servant disappears to the Far Realm? Does it carry items to Him if He's interested in them? Is that a mode of delivery to the Far Realm? I must revisit that section, perhaps I misinterpreted a part of it, perhaps there IS a greater purpose for this spell...
As Bilkin walked towards the rest of the group, papers and journal under his arm, bag slung uncomfortably on his elbow, the Servant paused its collection of wood, and the hovering bundle of wood turned towards Bilkin, stayed there a moment, then turned back, moving through the brush, collecting dry wood.
