The smoke engulfed the sky as the tiny village of Hobwash burned to ashes. Bodies lay strewn about the ground outside the village, in the fields, and near the forest. These nearest the forest had almost gotten away from the onslaught, only to be cut down from riders on horseback. The grass was matted by the trample of men on horses and on foot alike. The scene was sickening. The slaughter and eventful burning was quick and effective. The group, the heroes who were supposed to stop this type of thing, sat quiet watching the scene from the edge of the forest. They had been fooled, beaten, but who was responsible.
The cloud of dust from the south signaled the retreating bandits, they were too far ahead to catch by foot, but at least their direction was known. The thought of chasing them weighed heavy on the minds of the group, but the queen’s message was still in their care. Heading south to chase these bandits would put them outside their acceptable window for delivery.
As the group stood quietly at the forest boundary, a sudden snap of branches alerted them to something in the bushes to their northwest. The group tensed and reached for the weapons and waited for something to appear. Several tense moments later and Val exited the forest with a bloodied lump on his forehead.
“They took us unaware, damn bastards.” Before anyone could ask him any questions, he went on and explained the situation to them. Elena had ‘felt something’. She said she knew a better way to stop the bandits and went off into the forest to the north. Protesting, Val tried to stop her but she would not stop her crazed ramblings. So he followed her into the forest. It wasn’t too long into the night before they ran into a scout group of bandits. They had the numbers and swarmed Val. He was down and out before he could remember anything. He awoke and Elena was gone and he had a throbbing headache.
Ashamed, he joined the rest of the group silently watching the burning of Hobwash.
