A cacophony of deep, mind-numbing mutters, growls, and mumbles, with the occasional sonorous wail, presided in the poor man's head. It throbbed, sending waves of pain behind his eyes. What went wrong? he thought. When did my excuse to find Tala and a noble girl get replaced by these violent urges? His hand remained behind his ear, slowly scratching as all the gears in his head ground to dust.
The thief was to simply get in the house and I was to simply stand watch and warn her if the guards noticed anything, the thought ran through his head for the sixth time.
No, there HAD to be a dog.
Bilkin was rubbing his forehead with his other hand, shallowly breathing, rocking back and forth on the pile of junk.
She was supposed to see who or what was in the house, and if it pertained to the kidnappings, godsdamnit! What was I to do, but put out that street lantern to confuse the guards and abandon the plan? I did, I did, yes!
His rocking stopped.
But Valraukar pulled out a torch. Fine, that would've been fine by itself! Oh, but it wasn't, was it? No, no no no. The priestess sought to shed some light on the situation, yes!
He guffawed, and looked around to be sure nobody heard.
Yes, she cast a magic light on my head, in the pitch black alley, and just then, yes, just then the wood elf saw it proper to shoot the guard arresting Blank. What was going to be a small irregularity, barely a crime, turned into assault. The guards did their duty, oh yes, because an arrow flew right past this head!
He jabbed at his temple, shaking his head.
And that's when we lost it, didn't we? Yes, we saw it just to let him hear His whispers, didn't we? Now, what happened to you when you heard them the first time, hmmm? That one got off lucky. Maybe a lack of brains, maybe the adrenaline, or maybe both muffled the effect, the lucky bastard. You almost killed a man, you know. And you were THIS close--
--He raised his index and thumb very close to his eye, a minuscule distance between them--
--to flat out finishing him off with an Eldritch Blast. Now, what do you attribute that murderous urge to, hmm? Yes, yes. It's always been rumored that dabblers of the Far Realm often went insane from the various alien beings they saw or heard. But what can you do now, you poor sod? You're stuck with this bunch. You're a criminal. That guard knows your face. You've only a few options, don't you? You can rescue the girl and try to get a pardon via the noble, or you can turn yourself in. You'll probably be executed.
"No, no, that won't do..." he muttered.
The final alternative is to off yourself.
He shuddered.
Alternatively, you can devote yourself to Him-- yes, indeed, Him-- and grow in power. You're no longer an academic, are you? Dug too deep into something obscure instead of the your normal project, didn't you? And you've revoked your right as a lawful citizen. There's no obvious way to sever your bond to Him. It seems you'll need to embrace Him. We're stuck in a hole. Madness beckons, Bilkin, and there's no denying it. You can let your sanity slip to Him for free, or you can trade it for power. You might even delay the process if you get powerful enough. What do you say, Bilkin? Madness beckons.
"Yes, yes... To the forest we go, then..."
But it nagged at him. Gods, did it nag at him.
The thief was to simply get in the house and I was to simply stand watch and warn her if the guards noticed anything...
The rocking resumed.
