Atop this coffin, Jaz is about at eye level with his companions. Half of them got wounded by these skeletons, and with nothing left to destroy, they seem momentarily at a loss as to what to do. If Jaz has learned anything in his very short time associating with humans, it is that they are not in the least impetuous--always weighing pros and cons, considering options...not gnome-like at all. The man with the glasses will probably start writing things down any moment. So thinking they might perchance end up taking a short rest, Jaz un-slings his turtle lyra, already drawing looks from the crew as if he is daft. "This might help cure what ails you." He winks at the drow to his right, across the other coffin from him, and he begins to pick a soothing tune ((Song of Rest)) www.youtube.com/watch?v=8o4l5814FMA

Olek listened to the tune intently. Even in the short time he has spent with this gnome, he already knew there was power in his words and music. Is everyone a magician? As the song played, Olek looked around for a torch sconce, and put his torch there. He looked over his craftsmanship on the bonehead mace, bonked it a couple of times against the wall, and, satisfied, jimmied it onto his belt. Fighting these skeletons had awakened something new within him; a warrior of speed and power. Even though he had been struck down, it was not before physically throwing these undead around, setting them up for his allies' attacks, a risk he took because he knew his blade would not fare well against them. Catching Arthas' eye, he walked over and patted him on the shoulder.
"I pray only occasionally, and even then it is really just me saying the relevant god's name for luck. What you did back there with your prayers was quite miraculous and even saved me-- you have my immense gratitude."

(Are we getting a short rest in here? cause that would be kick-ass) Arthas jumped as Olek spoke, obviously still tense from the recent fight "Oh, ah, thank you... Though I have to say, I was glad to save myself too." Arthas inspected the open wound on his shoulder, probing it gingerly with his finger "Do you think there's many more in here with us? Maybe we ought to deal with uh.. that one.." pointing at the dead woman clawing uselessly at the interior of her coffin.

The gnome gets good sound of that little lyre of his--must be the turtle shell. www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOOQ1woZWQY((Short Rest? I'm confused; need edification. I get my new "Song of Rest" as far as my 1d6 bonus, but I'm confused about the "Short Rest" thing [PHB, p. 186], specifically what it means to "spend a hit dice". It says you regain these spent hit die after a long rest. So what are you temporarily losing when you spend a hit die? A level? Does it mean a 1st level PC cannot do this? Don't remember this from 2e.))

((A Hit Die is a die of HP that you have as a result of your level in a class. During a short rest (a period of relative inactivity lasting at least an hour), PCs can spend Hit Dice to regain HP-- a bard has a d8 hit die. A level 2 bard has 2d8 hit dice. What that means is a level 2 bard can expend his 2 hit dice to regain 2d8+CON mod HP. The only thing you "lose" is the ability to use those Hit Dice to regain HP again during a short rest-- hence the stipulation that you regain them after a long rest.
For example: Olek is a level 1 rogue, level 1 fighter. He has a d8 and d10 Hit Die. If we were taking a short rest, and Olek was in dire need of recovery, he could expend his d10, regaining 1d10+2 HP during the short rest. Let's say later he gets injured again and another short rest is taken. Olek has used his d10 Hit Die but still has his d8, so he expends it to regain 1d8+2 HP during the short rest. Let's say that he gets injured again after that-- tough shit for Olek! He used all his Hit Dice, and needs to take a long rest (8 hours of relative inactivity) before being able to use them again. However, even though he used his Hit Dice, he remained a level 1 rogue and level 1 fighter.
Good or no?))

Mercator exhaled visibly, relaxing to the melody of Jaz's tune. Sitting down and removing his blue goggles to reveal small attentive eyes, he said, "good idea. I need a moment to collect my thoughts." He then drew out a meal wafer as slender as himself, that he might rest while masticating on recent events.
"I prefer dead things that stay dead, or that assail me only in books and stories--or preferably on maps. What should we do about the ones in these sarcophagi?"

Snapping a small journal shut and tucking away a quill and vial of ink in a leather bundle, Olek walked over to Mercator. "Archie-- can I call you that? Mercator sounds like another word where I am from." He looked at the wafer the map collector ponderously ate, as if the process was nothing but the calculated maintenance of his body, much like a farmer sharpens his tools after using them-- not because he loves to, but because he works better with sharp implements. "I personally have no ties to the traditions held by the people here." He looked at Arthas as well, now. "I think if the dead-- pardon, undead, have potential to hurt us, we should take care of them before potential turns actual." He looked meaningfully towards the coffin in which the skeleton scraped for its freedom.
"The way I see it, there are two ways. One, we find each skeleton and destroy it, and tell these villagers their sacred dead were desecrated with dark sorcery anyway. Two, we find what is driving these skeletons. I am not greatly knowledgeable in the strange powers some of you wield, but I do know it takes a spell or enchantment to do something like this, and that spells and enchantments have limits. Earlier, Arthas and I talked about the potential of this Syphon being the cause of this. Only an idea. Maybe if we remove it from this crypt and store it in that special box Sir Weston gave us, the dead will sleep again." He looked around at the rest of the group, shrugging. "Only an idea."
Having said all he intended to, he went back to the sconce where his torch burned and commenced picking his fingernails clean with a dagger.

Arthas unslung his pack, setting it on the ground with a clatter and rummaged about in it for a moment before removing a salve. "Very possibly, though I don't think we should count on it. I'd hate to be ahh.. ambushed again. It's not like we know where the syphon is anyway, we'll likely need to search the crypt from top to bottom clearing the uhh.. undead as we go." Arthas grimaced as he rubbed the salve into the open gash on his shoulder "I don't care about these peoples burial traditions much, they seem kind of ahh.. stupid. So I think one of us should uhhmm.. you know." Arthas made a fist and mimed a clubbing action then pointed at the dead woman still clawing away at the coffin. "Any of you want some of this salve? It stings a bit, but it's pretty good. Blank?"

"Archie. Archie...," a wistful Mercator replied, as if to himself. "In my youth the other boys called me Arch, wanting me to be an arch demon (shudders) in our boyhood games. That is acceptable, of course." Then he sank back into thoughts that seemed distant, and a troubled look came over his face. "If we die in here, there is no hope for Octavie." A new determination seemed to wash over him, though his mood remained dark.
"When we are rested, I think a thorough investigation of this room is in order. Then, the termination of these corpses."

Blank was still angry with Mercator. Although she wasn't hit by his flask of acid, the fact that he thought it was a good idea to throw it so close to her was still irritating. This was compounded by the fact that he had awoken more undead with his careless action. With the battle over however, she decided to try to calm herself and take stock of the situation.
In the coffin beside her the soulless husk railed against it's "prison," reaching out in vain to grab at anything. The gnome sat upon the other nearby coffin singing a tune with his lyra. Blank knew it was a bad idea to create unnecessary noise in a dangerous place as this, but also knew such advice would fall on deaf ears. Olek wrote in his journal while Mercator ate something and Arthas dressed his wounds. She decided to do the same and took a bandage out of her bag and cleaned and dressed the fresh wound on her arm, another soon to be scar to blend into the others.
The only other item in the room with investigating was the large chest. She crouched next to it, looking for any possible signs of a trap or recent tampering.
