I figured I'd bring this up to everyone as we need to figure out the best way to handle movement and posting while text role playing. At times, things get a little chaotic with everyone posting at the same time and moving around. I try to keep up the best as I can, but sometimes people's post get missed. For passive, non-battle, situations I can continue trying to handle it without forcing a post order. We can do a post order if you guys want, or try something else if you anyone has any ideas. If you feel the way its going now is fine too, we can continue without any changes.
A post order would slow things down, and limit random dialogue while others are typing. The positive to this would be that it gives everyone time to type something up and feel they have a chance to express their ideas without someone scene stealing. The problem is that not everyone has input during situations and like I said it may slow down the experience even more.
Another drawback to text role play, is moving your token on the board. Generally, in voice rp, you just move the token around slowly and are able to quickly vocalize if you want to do something. In text, I believe the best way to handle movement is just restrict it to your characters round move limit (Generally 30ft). Movement and post order may have to coincide when the party is moving through a forest or city. Mainly because if one person types faster and moves more, he could be halfway across the map before any of the party has decided how to move or act.
The party or myself as GM can decide on a group leader from time to time to decide where the group goes as a whole to move through quick areas where no threat or actions will occur.
So to close this post, the main thing I'm looking for is any input you may have concerning posting rates and order and how to handle movement better. Thanks for playing and posting!

I'm glad you posted this, Corey. I'm a fast typist, and I worry I am going too quickly for everyone else. I'm likewise worried about stealing the spotlight, because I'd love for everyone to be engaged.
Concerning moving around the map like before, usually my past DMs considered such to be combat situations (even if no one was attacking) and used turn order. It WAS slow, but it was better than a free for all with some people left out.
For example, I'd have loved to have had more time to make Elena react to Dralban last session, but I felt I ought to rush to get into the action lest a guard walk in mid conversation.
I'm happy with any decision you make!

Corey,
A great point and one that should be addressed.
As to the chaos of last session, I think it was mainly due to the party splitting up. Separation lead to chaotic posting with respect to time and player action which lead to confusion which lead to more separation which lead to....etc, etc. And so the Wild Rumpus began.
I think in most cases of non-battle and to a lesser extent in battle encounters, we should stick to free posting of character verbal communications, to maintain fluidity.
Actions are a different story; I think battle encounters, and certain "adventuring" situations demand structure, whether that is the formal order of the roll20 tracker or something of our own devising.
What's everyone else think?

Yeah being new to all this it is chaotic (and fun lol) but structure in the case of combat and certain dialogue situations I could see it helping a lot.
If the character development chatter gets to be a lot for you or the majority of us we could work on non-story pertinent dialogue flow.

I think a post order would be fantastic. It would allow each player to express their character's actions, motivations, and words in a thought through, appropriate to the situation manner.
I also think that soon, when we get a REALLY good grasp of each other's characters, we can also include other characters' reactions in our posts, much like Tec and Dral did in their RP threads this week.

I'm going to side with Corey on this one. I think he hits the nail on the head. I think that the more we play, the faster and more natural it will feel with free posting. Encounters, I feel, is a must though.

Thanks for your responses everyone. For general, everyday random action we will keep it how it is. But when it comes to more important encounters then I'll make it order based so everyone can get a chance to type. During these ordered situation, please refrain from posting anything IC out of your turn as it'll flood the scene.
Thanks for the idea, Lloyd, but I'd like to stay away from using each others characters. If the other person says its fine for you to include their character in their post minimally, that is fine, but otherwise we need to stay away from deciding situations for others characters. That was always a big no no in Ayenee (my old rp realm).

Suddenly, Bilkin, Valraukar, Blank, Dralban, and Tecuani ran towards Elena. They threw themselves on their knees and worshiped her. "Please," they begged. "Take ALL of our gold and items so that you may buy yourself something nice."

Dralban to Elena, "...And this other fly I caught. I was going to eat it myself, but I feel you need it more than I." Dralban, pleased with his good deed, waits for Elena to accept his gift.

You never rolled a Perception check to see that Dralban squashed the fly to catch it. You cuddled a dead fly... and no survivors. Hahaha

She swallowed the the fly...I guess she'll die.
"There was an old lady who swallowed a fly I don't know why she swallowed a fly - perhaps she'll die! There was an old lady who swallowed a spider, That wriggled and wiggled and tiggled inside her; She swallowed the spider to catch the fly; I don't know why she swallowed a fly - Perhaps she'll die! There was an old lady who swallowed a bird; How absurd to swallow a bird. She swallowed the bird to catch the spider, She swallowed the spider to catch the fly; I don't know why she swallowed a fly - Perhaps she'll die! There was an old lady who swallowed a cat; Fancy that to swallow a cat! She swallowed the cat to catch the bird, She swallowed the bird to catch the spider, She swallowed the spider to catch the fly; I don't know why she swallowed a fly - Perhaps she'll die! There was an old lady that swallowed a dog; What a hog, to swallow a dog; She swallowed the dog to catch the cat, She swallowed the cat to catch the bird, She swallowed the bird to catch the spider, She swallowed the spider to catch the fly; I don't know why she swallowed a fly - Perhaps she'll die! There was an old lady who swallowed a cow, I don't know how she swallowed a cow; She swallowed the cow to catch the dog, She swallowed the dog to catch the cat, She swallowed the cat to catch the bird, She swallowed the bird to catch the spider, She swallowed the spider to catch the fly; I don't know why she swallowed a fly - Perhaps she'll die! There was an old lady who swallowed a horse... She's dead, of course!" -English Nursery Rhyme
